Maurice M. Sponcler, Jr. graduated from Newnan High School in Newnan, Georgia in 1960. He graduated from Wake Forest University with a B.S. degree in 1964. In 1967, Mr. Sponcler received his J.D. from the University of Georgia School of Law, and was a member of Phi Delta Phi. He was admitted to the Georgia Bar in 1967. 

Mr. Sponcler is a member of the Conasauga Circuit Bar Association and the State Bar of Georgia, and is active in the Workers' Compensation Section of the State Bar of Georgia, having served as Chairman in 1986-1987. He specializes in the areas of workers' compensation, civil litigation, and insurance defense.

A captain in the U.S. army from 1967-1969, Mr. Sponcler also served a year in South Vietnam as an advisor to the Vietnamese Ninth Division in the Delta. For his service, Mr. Sponcler was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal, Vietnamese Combat Service Medal, and Purple Heart.

Mr. Sponcler served as president of the Dalton Rotary Club, chairman of the Advisory Board of Directors of the Salvation Army, chairman of the Dalton-Whitfield Hospital Authority, and trustee of the Healthcare Foundation. He is past president of the Dalton-Whitfield Chamber of Commerce, past president of the Dalton-Whitfield Chamber of Commerce Foundation, and actice in the United Way, Heart Fund, and many other charitable organizations.

Mr. Sponcler and his family attend the First Presbyterian Church of Dalton, where he currently serves as an Elder and has been active in the Sunday School program. He served as chairman of the Staff Committee for 2001-2002. He is married to the former Betty Bowen of Dalton, and has two children, Dr. Lisa S. Norman of Winston-Salem, North Caroline and Dori Sponcler, who works in the public relations department of Nieman Marcus in Atlanta.
